Hecht Museum

Hecht Museum, University of Haifa

The Hecht Museum houses an impressive collection of archaeology and art. It was founded by the late Dr. Reuben Hecht, who established the Dagon Granaries, the large grain silos near the port of Haifa.

Archaeology: the permanent exhibit includes: Archaeology of the Land of Israel [Eretz-Israel] from the Chalcolithic Period to the Mishnaic Talmudic Era (Roman and Byzantine Periods); "Phoenicians on the Northern Coast of Israel in the Biblical Period" - this exhibit focuses on their contribution to maritime architecture as well as to their being seafaring merchants; "Ancient Crafts and Industries" (metalworking, woodworking, glassmaking, stone vessels industry, the art of writing, and the physician's craft);

A special wing in the Museum is dedicated to the exhibit of Ma'agan Mikhael Ancient Ship - on display are the hull of the 2,400-year-old ship, the anchor and the cargo. This wing functions as a live workshop for the study of ancient seafaring.

Art: Dr. Hecht's private collection is on display, representing various streams, mainly Impressionism and the Jewish School of Paris. Among the striking works are those by Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Van Gogh, Modigliani, the expressionist Jewish painter Chaim Soutine, and Struck; the Ghez Collection displays works byartists who perished in the Holocaust.

The Road of the Millennia (Derech Hadorot): The project suggested by Dr. Hecht was based on locating the remains of ancient buildings facing destruction in sites around Israel, and transporting them from their original site to the grounds allocated to the outdoor museum, where they would be reconstructed along walking trails surrounded by natural forestation. Among the reconstructed buildings are dwellings and a burial complex from the Negev Highlands, and an oil press from Hurbat Castra located at the southern entrance to Haifa.
