“The scenic route through Haifa - is the very first enclosed tourist route in Israel through which the visitor is exposed for the first time all of Haifa’s wonderful views, unique tourist attractions and the special urban structure of our priceless city.
The route passes through twenty one look-out posts which are spread out along about sixty kilometers along the Carmel Ridge and in different locations throughout the city. This project - which has had about ten million Israeli shekels invested in it – represents the culmination of a combination of both creative enterprise and financial underpinning on the part of the following agencies: the Muncipality of Haifa, the Israeli Office of Tourism, the Tourism and Leisure Board of Haifa, and – last but not least - of private donors who have built five unique look-out posts along the route.
If you take the drive along the ‘scenic route through Haifa’, you will be in prime position to gain a perfect impression of the rare beauty offered by this panoramic drive through Haifa. You will also be able to take a peek at all its wonderful neighbourhoods, glimpse its unique tourist sites and attractions, as well as finding the time to take in the view of the vistas on offer in its surrounds. The look-out spots which are located in specially selected points along the way are there to emphasise all the more strongly the many and varied angles of observation and the special encounters you will
experience with the areas of the city which really stand out: areas of the city which are typical of Haifa – those spots where the mountains encounter the sea and where green and blue merge into one.
The drive along the ‘scenic route through Haifa’ has been constructed on a line which follows an ancient water course. This route stretches down from that part of the Carmel Ridge which is located in the Carmel National Park, and which houses the University of Haifa, through the wide boulevards of the Moriah area, Yafe Nof St, as far as Stella Maris, and passes through special spots on the slopes of the Carmel, as well as in the Down Town area of the city.
This route continues on its journey by passing close by to several sites of historic interest, as well as centres of culture and art, places in which to shop, leisure areas and other types of tourist attraction.
The seed of the ‘scenic route through Haifa’ idea came to fruition as a finished project at the beginning of the 1990s and was first offered to the public in 2003 by the Municipality of Haifa, the Haifa Tourist and Leisure Board and the Israeli Office of Tourism, through the good offices of the relevant government department. The idea behind the scenic route was greatly influenced by similar scenic enterprises which exist in many cities world-wide, including those in the United States of America.
The raison d’etre behind the ‘scenic route through Haifa’ journey is to market the city of Haifa in as holistic a way as possible. This is done by subsuming all its elements and components into one piece. The ‘scenic route through Haifa’ therefore embraces each and every site which Haifa currently offers to our visitors, with special emphasis on the multi-ethnic and religious attractions of our city. And whilst we are on this subject, we are very proud to be able to tell you that all religions and sects live happily and interact together under one Haifa roof: whether they be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Bahai, Druze or Ahamdiya.
It was recommended that the ‘scenic route through Haifa’ project take place both during the day and during the night, since the many different views of Haifa which are available from the various look-out points scattered around the city cover and uncover their wares both in the keen light of day, as well as in the deep dark of night-time.
Benny Elon, the then minister of tourism, stated that the present project would receive an extra layer of investment from the Ministry of Tourism especially designated for the City of Haifa. The minister emphasized that he was confident that our project would represent a tremendous additional contribution to the expansion in choice of the variety of tourist treats and experiences currently on offer to visitors in the City of Haifa and, furthermore, would also help to designate Haifa as a truly excellent example of tourism in Israel.
The Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav, has stated that our love of our city and our confidence in our own potential that is as yet hidden away in it, provides us with the sweep of vision which is so necessary to the planning and realizing of this project, which is being carried out with the blessing of the Israeli Office of Tourism. All visitors to Haifa, as well as all those who currently enjoy our ‘scenic route through Haifa’ project, should consider themselves as guests of the city, as well as of the Haifa Tourist and Leisure Board, as well as of private guests of the city’s mayor himself.
