Tour no. 11: The Stella Maris Ridge (otherwise known as The Star of the Sea)

Click to close window

The Stella Maris Ridge, which descends right down to the sea is at the north western brow of Mount Carmel. The sight of it breaking through to the west is the most striking image of any of its kind on Israel’s entire coast line. And only the narrowest of strips separates it from the sea. At its greatest height it is possible for you to see an image of the Mediterranean Sea reflected on three sides – from the west, north and east. Its evocative name ‘Star of the Sea’ was given it in honor of the light-house which was built at its edge.

Mount Carmel owes its reputation for holiness and sanctity largely due to the image we have of the prophet, Elijah, who – according to the Bible – fought against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. According to traditional sources, Elijah isClick to close window supposed to have hidden in the Cave which lies on the slopes of the ridge of the Stella Maris. However, the Carmelite Monks sanctified an additional cave which is situated at the top of the ridge and built a great monastery on top of it. This monastery is now the world center of the Carmelite Order of Monks.
