As a city Haifa is laid out like a building of many floors: on the ground floor you have the Down Town area, the port, the German Colony and Bat Galim. On the middle floor you have Hadar ha Carmel, which resembles a high rostrum. On the lower slopes you have Upper Hadar, and above those, on the top floor, you have Mercaz Ha Carmel (the Carmel Center), Ahuza, Neve Shaanan and the other neighbourhoods which sit atop the very peak of Mount Carmel.
Quite a few stepped routes descend from the crest of the Carmel and cross the patchwork quilk of terraces that are ‘chiselled’ along these tracks. These may be situated in the little charming nooks and crannies that are dotted about here and there. Or, you may come across them from the various observation posts from which you can have a marvellous view of the city.. We are therefore so lucky in Haifa to be able to enjoy the city landscape from all sorts of different angles and points of view.
The path of one thousand steps is laid out as a stepped terrace, like a patchwork quilt, with paths, steps and streets which are all clearly sign-posted. Its nickname, ‘the path of the one thousand steps’ is actually an understatement, because there are in fact one thousand one hundred steps. This route is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful and interesting in the whole of Haifa.
The tour route: From the Savyonim (Ragwort) look-out point – the Gadera steps – Ha Hashmonaim St – the public gardens – the Koresh steps to the Reuben Buniak steps – the Abu Nedar Institutes – the ‘Ezra’ hospital – the ha Zionut Avenue (Zionism Avenue) – the Shifra steps – Abbas St., Ha Geffen St.
